Abigail Oakley's Workshops
- 8/14, 1:45 - 3:00 pm, Coor L1-34, Online/Hybrid Instruction - We will work on designing the online classroom and talk about teacher presence within a course. These elements can be tricky since students navigate your course on their own and a solid teacher presence can ensure students don’t actually feel alone during the course. This workshop counts toward your certification for online teaching.
- 8/31, 10:15 am - 11:30 am, LL 245, Online Course Structure - We will cover course structure and setting up the organization of your Blackboard shell. Those who attended Abby's breakout session at convocation are not eligible to earn another badge from this workshop.
- Designing Learning Modules on Blackboard, 9/12, 1:00pm - 2:15pm, CPCOM 107
This workshop will provide a detailed look at how to use Blackboard learning modules to design assignment sequences for your online class. Packaging weekly assignments or individual class lessons in a learning module is a convenient way to organize your class lessons and ensure that your students don’t miss any parts of a lesson. This workshop will count as an application badge.
- Digital Literacies & Online Teaching, 9/20, 11am - 12:15pm, CPCOM 207
Although we often think about literacy as reading and writing, with advanced technology comes advanced forms of literacy. In this workshop, we will examine the nature of digital literacies in their social and educational contexts. Knowing the ins & outs of digital literacies can help us to better imagine the digital literacy of our students and how best to help them succeed in the online classroom. This workshop will count as a pedagogy badge.
- Facilitating Online Peer Review, Tuesday 10/3, 1:00 pm - 2:15 pm, CPCOM 107
Peer review is an essential part of any writing class, however peer review can be difficult to organize when taking into consideration time constraints and lack of face-to-face rapport between students. This workshop will address some of those concerns, and give strategies for facilitating peer review three different ways: 1) On Google Drive, 2) Using the Groups feature of Blackboard, and 3) Using Digication. This workshop will count as an application badge.
- Teacher Persona & Managing Online Discussion, Weds 10/11, 11 am - 12:15 pm, ECG G319
Sometimes it can be difficult to know how to present ourselves to students in an online classroom. In this workshop we will discuss strategies for introducing ourselves as well as strategies for being “present” in the online classroom. In the same vein, one of the easiest ways to be “present” in the online classroom is by participating with students in class discussion. So, we will also be talking about strategies both for productive online discussion and time management regarding online discussion. This workshop will count as a pedagogy badge.

Perhaps you’re curious about “gamification,” or maybe you’d just like to make sure that your online class isn’t too dry. Either way, we’ll discuss game theory and how it can apply to the online classroom as well as some resources of web games that might help your students get thinking about research topics. This workshop will count as a pedagogy badge
- Using Social Media in the Online Classroom, Weds 10/25, 11 am - 12:15 pm, ECG G319
Social media can be a great tool to connect with your students in online classes. From live tweeting a documentary to starting a Facebook group, we’ll discuss how social media can be used in the online classroom. In this workshop, we will create a heuristic for thinking about using new technology in your online classroom. We will also go over some of the concerns that arise when utilizing social media for classroom purposes (including privacy and FERPA). This workshop will count as a pedagogy badge.
