Biography

Jared Klemp's research focuses on British and Irish fiction from the 20th century to the present. His work interrogates the political ramifications of experiments with character in the modernist novels of James Joyce, Viriginia Woolf, and Flann O'Brien, arguing that each author's experiments with character are attempts to reimagine communities with their readers against recieved national, colonial, patriarchal, and literary historical communities.

In addition to his work on character, he is also interested in contemporary British fiction and its relationship to modernism, especially in authors who see a return to modernist forms as a way to speak to contemporary political or social problems. Currently, he is researching the British novelist and artist Tom McCarthy, whose novels, manifestos, and performance art often self-consciously return to modernism to address problems from the crisis in the humanities to climate change.
