Biography

After Sarah Duerden completed her undergraduate work at the University of Sheffield in English and drama, she moved to America and completed her doctorate at Arizona State University on the public and political poetry of Seamus Heaney. Since that time, her focus has shifted from literature to rhetoric and composition. She worked for several years in the National Science Foundation’s integrated program for first-year engineering students at Arizona State University (FIPE) and published a number of papers related to that work on integrated curricula, active and cooperative learning, curricula assessment, and various ways of integrating English with engineering. Her work with the FIPE program allowed her to collaborate with faculty from engineering, physics, math and chemistry, both here at ASU and at other universities, giving her greater insight into disciplines other than English and effective learning communities. In addition to teaching First-Year Writing, she also enjoys teaching Writing About Literature for nonmajors which ties into her own interest in contemporary British fiction. She has taught a number of courses in the Department of English including First-Year Composition, Writing About Literature and Academic Writing.  More recently she has taught English 475 Popular Periodical Writing, English 474 Review Writing, English 302 Business Writing. She also works with experienced teaching assistants helping them to develop their teaching portfolios.
