Application Deadline: English Graduate Studies Awards

Graduate students in the Department of English at ASU are invited to apply for scholarships and awards. Each scholarship or award has specific eligibility criteria and submission requirements. Please visit the links provided for application details—and please read carefully. All award amounts are approximate pending available funding. Note that some awards have a later deadline of Mar. 1.

High Impact Internship Award—approximately $1,000 each, two awards       

Undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Englishat ASU who are completing internships for academic credit (any number of credits) with a high-impact factor are eligible to apply. The internship must be unpaid and can have been completed during the summer, fall, or spring of the current academic year. Application deadline: March 1, 2022.

Carl C. Carlie Linguistics Fellowship – approximately $680   

The Carl C. Carlie Linguistics Fellowship was created by Joan Berry, a linguistics former student, and her husband Charles Berry in honor of Joan’s grandfather Carl C. Carlie. The fellowship will be awarded in the fall 2022semester to a graduate student in linguistics in the Department of English.  Application deadline: February 1, 2022.

Wilfred A. Ferrell Memorial Fellowship – approximately $500   

This fellowship will be awarded in the fall 2022 semester for the academic year 2022/23.  The recipient must be a PhD student in good standing in the Department of English and must have completed one year of coursework by December of the year preceding the grant. Application deadline: February 1, 2022.

George and Collice Portnoff Endowed Fellowship in Comparative Literature – approximately $3,000  This fellowship will be awarded for the academic year 2022/23  and disbursed ½ in the Fall 2022 and ½ in the Spring 2023. In order to be considered, students must be full-time master's or doctoral degree students in the Department of English working in two literatures in the original languages, not including English. This award is designated for study in literature. Application deadline: February 1, 2022.

Outstanding Paper on Second Language Writing Award – approximately $300 

This annual award recognizes an outstanding intellectual work by ASU graduate students on issues related to second language writing and writers. The paper should be 15 to 30 pages in length (not including the bibliography), follow APA or MLA style, and be written during the calendar year preceding the award year. It can be a philosophical, historical or empirical study as well as a critical review essay—as long as it addresses a significant issue related to second language writing and writers. Co-authored papers are acceptable as long as all the co-authors meet the eligibility criteria stated below. In the case of co-authored papers, the award amount will be divided among the eligible co-authors. Application deadline: March 1, 2022.

Marvin Fisher Book Award – approximately $250 

The Marvin Fisher Book Award is given biannually to an international student enrolled in a graduate program in the Department of English. The award is to be used for the purchase of books needed by the applicant. Application deadline:  February 1, 2022 for the fall 2022 award.

English International Graduate Student Book Scholarship – approximately $300 

This scholarship will be awarded in the fall 2022 semester. This book scholarship was created by Dr. Jai Young Park who earned his BA in English (1997) and his PhD in English (2004) at Arizona State University. He is currently an associate professor and chair of the Department of English Education in the College of Education at Chonbuk National University in Korea. Recipient must be a currently enrolled international graduate student in the Department of English and making good progress. Application deadline: February 1, 2022.

Katharine C. Turner Dissertation Fellowship – approximately $13,000  

This fellowship will be awarded for the academic year 2022/23, and  disbursed ½ in the Fall 2022 and ½ in the Spring 2023. The recipient will receive approximately $13,000, in addition to coverage of tuition and health insurance. The Katharine Turner Dissertation Fellowship is designed to enable doctoral candidates in the Department of English working in the field of American Literature to finish writing their dissertations. Application deadline: February 1, 2022.

Nick Ivins Memorial Literature Scholarship – approximately $550 

This scholarship was established in memory of Nick Ivins (BA, English Literature, 2004) to support deserving students who love literature. Preference is given to students who have a focus area of English literature and who have participated or are currently enrolled in an ACMRS Study Abroad Summer Program or other ASU Study Abroad Program.  The scholarship will be awarded for the fall 2022 semester.   Application deadline: March 1, 2022.

Marvin Fisher Scholarship – approximately $10,000 

This scholarship recognizes demonstrated excellence in a graduate student’s research/creative work and their impact as a teacher in the college classroom. The recipient will receive $10,000 for 2022/23 and be known as the Department of English Marvin Fisher Scholar for that year.  Applicants must hold a teaching assistantship in the Department of English to be considered.  Application deadline:  February 1, 2022.
