The Future of Language-Related Disciplines: Theory, Practice, and Social Media

Join us for an exciting webinar with Mike Mena, creator of the popular open-access educational YouTube channel The Social Life of Language.
In this theoretical and practical talk, The Future of Language-Related Disciplines: Theory, Practice, & Social Media, Mena will discuss the four guiding principles behind “academic transposition,” the pedagogical and methodological approach he developed to make accessible to a wider audience the complex discussions about language and race. He examines the hegemonic perceptions of the Academy, including how academic registers can serve as barriers to entry for many racialized populations. He will also speak to the general resistance of the Academy toward the use of social media as a legitimate medium of instruction (using YouTube as the primary example). Attendees will receive access to exclusive video guides, not available to the general public.
This virtual talk is hosted by ASU English's program in linguistics and applied linguistics.
