ASU students, community take part in virtual visit with Jonathan Safran Foer

Kristen LaRue-Sandler

On October 1, Writing Programs in the Department of English at ASU hosted Jonathan Safran Foer, author of We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins at Breakfast for a virtual visit.

Writing Programs has selected Foer's nonfiction book as its 2020-2021 common read.

Jeffrey Cohen, who is dean of humanities in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, made introductions, and Kyle Jensen, who is director of Writing Programs, moderated the conversation. Foer discussed his work and answered questions from faculty and students, including:

  • “In your experience, what action or leadership have you observed as successful/not so successful in potential programs such as this one?” (from social work major Reyna Gallegos), and
  • “How effective do you think the U.S. government will be at reducing climate change in the coming years? Is collective action on the part of citizens our last, best hope?” (from accountancy major Erik Unsworth).

And more.

A video of the event is now available on the Department of English’s YouTube channel (or you can watch here):
