Homecoming Writing Contest 2021 winners honored

Kristen LaRue-Sandler

On October 28, 2021, we celebrated the winners of our annual Homecoming Writing Contest with a virtual awards presentation and a reading from the students’ works. Homecoming Committee chair Cajsa Baldini emceed. This year’s awardees are:

  • Eleanor Ambler – poetry, for “Serenade (A Childhood Dream)”
  • Timothy Nathan – fiction/creative nonfiction, for “Sinking Rocks”
  • Thomas Bate - scholarly essay, for “’Rank with Beauty’: The Sublime Experience of Nabokov’s Lolita

Eleanor Ambler is an English and Sociology major at ASU Online. A professional ballerina in her non-ASU life, some of her favorite writing experiences at ASU have been participating in the PEN Project Internship and getting to explore her creative voice in various writing workshop classes.

Timothy Nathan is a veteran of the U.S. Army and a Shift Supervisor at Starbucks in Lee’s Summit, MO. He is currently an English major at ASU Online. While using his benefits from Starbucks’ College Achievement Plan (SCAP), he’s had the opportunity to learn conveniently with an innovative university in a subject that is fulfilling. His goal is to become a professional storyteller.

Thomas Bate is an English (literature) major here on ASU’s Tempe campus. A member of Barrett, the Honors College, he has been a writing tutor for the University Academic Success Programs. A current highlight of his ASU experience is his internship with the PEN Project. He will attend graduate school in California in the fall of 2022 to start training to become a practicing psychotherapist.

Begun in 2007 at the suggestion of now-Professor Emeritus Randel Helms, the Homecoming Writing Contest recognizes the creative and scholarly writing of undergraduate students within the Department of English at ASU. The Department of English is gratified to continue this tradition of making awards for excellence in student writing.
