Statement on passing of Debra Schwartz

Arizona State University

We are deeply saddened to report that our colleague, Debra Schwartz, died while on a solitary camping trip in Oak Creek Canyon, an activity she embraced "to enjoy peaceful nature in a poetic kind of way" (as a friend says on her Facebook page). Our hearts and thoughts are with her family. Please feel free to share your thoughts and remembrances of Debra via email to Mark Lussier. We will gather your messages for her family.

Previous statement from May 7, 2016

Our hearts are with those seeking our missing colleague, Debra Schwartz, in northern Arizona, and the ASU Department of English stands ready to help in any way possible to find her and bring her home.

This is an upsetting situation at a stressful period in the academic cycle, and students and faculty might need support given the uncertainty involved. Students can seek assistance at ASU Counseling Services and faculty and staff are encouraged to utilize ASU’s Employee Assistance Office.
