Each track in the English, MA has slightly different requirements for admission.

Comparative Literature

The Graduate College requires a grade point average of “B” (3.00) or better in the last two years of work leading to the bachelor’s degree. Applicants must apply online to Graduate Admissions. The following items must be submitted along with the application:

  1. A one to two page, single spaced statement of purpose detailing the student’s background, reasons for wanting to do graduate work in comparative literature, and plans for the future.

  2. Three letters of recommendation from faculty familiar with the applicant’s work.

  3. Resume or vita.

  4. Academic writing sample relevant to the field (minimum 15 pages in length).

  5. Official transcripts.

Deadlines:  January 1 and April 15

English studies

The application is completed online.  Choose "online" for campus. Choose "English Studies" for specialization. The following supporting documents are required to apply for the MA English online degree program:

  1. Official transcripts. Note that applicants need a grade point average of "B" (3.0) or higher in the final two years of work leading to the bachelor's degree.

  2. A two-page, single-spaced statement of purpose. This document should explain how your academic and professional interests fit with our online MA English program

  3. A resume

  4. Two academic or professional letters of recommendation. A third letter is optional. These letters should provide a clear picture of the applicant's potential for successfully completing a master's degree.

This program has multiple deadlines:

  • Summer Admission: April 19 session A, June 2 session B (in the application, select "Summer (May)")
  • Fall Admission: July 23 session A, September 16 session B (in the application, select "Fall (Aug)")
  • Spring Admission: December 14 session A; February 15 session B (in the application, select "Spring (Jan)")
Literature

Applicants for admission to the Master of Arts in English (literature track) must submit the following items:

  1. Graduate application

  2. Three letters of recommendation from faculty familiar with the applicant's academic work.

  3. Resume or vita.

  4. One to two page, single spaced statement of purpose detailing the student's background, reasons for wanting to do graduate work in literature, and plans for the future.

  5. Academic writing sample relevant to the field of literary studies.

  6. Official transcript.

Deadlines:  January 1 and April 15 for fall; September 15 for spring

Writing, rhetorics, and literacies

Applicants for admission to the Master of Arts (M.A.) in English (writing, rhetorics, and literacies track) must apply online and submit the following:

  1. Three letters of recommendation from faculty members familiar with their work.

  2. One to two page, single spaced statement of purpose.

  3. Resume or vita.

  4. Graduate Admissions application.

  5. Academic writing sample.

  6. Official transcripts.

Deadlines:  January 1 and April 15

*The GRE is not required for admission for any track.
