Our motto “start here, go anywhere” captures the unique value of an undergraduate degree from the Department of English at Arizona State University—one that can serve you in any art form, any discipline, and any profession.

Our undergraduate degree programs are designed to launch you from college to career or graduate school, with ample opportunity for both reflection and practice. Our diverse curriculum strives to map the contours of what it means to be human by examining the how and why of human passions, hopes, dreams, anxieties, downfalls, transgressions, successes and failures in our past, present, and future. We do this by studying language itself as well as imaginative and non-fictive production, circulation, and consumption of oral, visual and written, film, and digital texts.

Our top-tier internship program offers a chance for you to “test-drive” your ideal career before graduation. Internships can provide English and film majors with valuable real-world experiences and networking opportunities that increase confidence, communication skills, and marketability, all while earning college credit for the work. Internships are a great way to professionalize academic skills, to learn from experts in the field, and to build a professional portfolio.

We’ll help prepare you for a successful career in the field of your choice—whether in activism or account management, communications or civil service, publishing or politics, writing or web development. Many of our majors also attain post-graduate degrees in the field, as well as in related disciplines such as law, medicine, and education.

No matter your destination, your undergraduate journey starts with your application to join our department. During the application process, you’ll declare a major or minor in English or Film and Media Studies at the Tempe campus or online.
