Editor’s Note: This tribute to Miles Swarthout, son of Department of English donors Glendon and Kathryn Swarthout, was delivered as a speech at the 54th annual Swarthout Awards Ceremony on April 21, 2016. It has been adapted here for print. The presenter, alumna Stacie Anfinson (MFA 1987), was a close friend of Miles Swarthout and these are her remembrances. Anfinson teaches writing and humanities courses at Scottsdale Community College.
Beginning in February 2017, Department of English PhD candidate Travis Franks will spend 11 months in Queensland, Australia, funded by a Fulbright U.S. Student Award, studying country literature and music.
More than one hundred friends attended Nick Salerno’s funeral mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and again they came to the Harkins Valley Art Theatre memorial. More than “a few hundred of his personal friends” mourn him. He is part of us all.
“Thank you for sending the image of the tile,” ASU grad Irena Praitis wrote, “what memories this brings back!”
Praitis earned both her Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing (2001) and her PhD in literature (1999) at ASU. She was also an accomplished athlete. “The other rower on the tile is Kristy Csavina. She was a PhD in Bio-mechanical Engineering,” Praitis said.
