In 1954, Evan Hunter wrote "The Blackboard Jungle," which was made into a movie the following year. The author, who later went on to enjoy decades of fame as the creator of the 87th Precinct series under his pen name, Ed McBain, was in his starving-writer phase when he took a job teaching at a boys’ vocational high school in his native New York City.
