How is the Central Arizona Writing Project related to the National Writing Project?
CAWP is one of over 200 sites that make up the NWP network. With NWP at the helm, CAWP works with Arizona State University and local schools and school districts to offer quality professional development to local educators.
I don't teach English/Language Arts. Is the writing project useful for me?
Yes! The writing project is not just for English/Language Arts teachers. We welcome educators at all levels and in all disciplines. Educators who take part in the Summer Institute work collaboratively to develop curriculum and improve teaching practices in order to support students and their writing across content areas.
Who can apply to the Summer Institute?
K-20 educators who are residents of the state of Arizona and have taught in their current school district for three or more years are eligible to apply for the Central Arizona Writing Project Summer Institute. Applicants must be new Summer Institute fellows and may not have participated in another Summer Institute.
Do you want to receive graduate course credit? Teachers who want to receive graduate or non-degree credit must pay to register a minimum of 1 course credit at a cost of approximately $1076.00.They may choose to pay more and earn up to 3 credits for ENG 594: Central Arizona Writing Project through Arizona State University’s Department of English. Teachers who select this option, will also receive a $500.00 stipend after completing the course (only 5 total stipends are provided through funding from the National Writing Project). Register and pay for the CAWP ISI once you have been accepted.
What are the perks of being a part of the Summer Institute?
Participants will gain professional development on the teaching of K-University writing and gain access to research-based practices. Besides the collegial relationships and teaching practices you will take from the Summer Institute, participants will be able to use resources like CAWP's library of professional texts. Participants will gain access to professional development and inservice opportunities for their school and district.
Can I use Title I monies to participate in the Summer Institute?
Most districts allow participants to use Title I and Title II monies to support participation in the Summer Institute.
Can I earn credit towards my master's or doctoral degree?
Yes. Participants can earn credit towards our one year Masters in English Education degree at Arizona State University by taking part in the Summer Institute. Five Ws and One H of the Invitational Summer Institute
Who: K-20 educators from private and public schools throughout the area who teach all grade levels and disciplines are invited to apply to for CAWP's Invitational Summer Institute.
What: The Invitational Summer Institute is the cornerstone of the National Writing Project model. Every summer a select group of distinguished local teachers attend an intensive two-week professional development institute.
When: The Orientation, which prepares CAWP participants for the Invitational Summer Institute, is held in May of each year. The Invitational Summer Institute is held in June each summer and lasts two weeks.
Where: The Invitational Summer Institute is held at Arizona State University's Ross-Blakley Hall building on the Tempe campus.
Why: Taking part in CAWP's Invitational Summer Institute will be one of the best professional development experiences of your career. It will be time consuming and challenging in many ways, but the skills you learn and relationships you develop will be memorable and life-lasting.
How: You must apply to take part in the CAWP Invitational Summer Institute. If selected, you will be notifed by CAWP directors and co-directors.
