In the spring of each year, a scholarship of approximately $770 will be awarded for the upcoming fall semester to a full-time undergraduate English major in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the ASU Tempe campus. The applicant must:

  • be at least a junior (56 credit hours completed), and
     
  • have at least one more semester to complete before graduation.

The John Doebler Memorial Award in Shakespeare and Renaissance Studies

The John Doebler Memorial Award in Shakespeare and Renaissance Studies is given for the best undergraduate critical or scholarly paper written on Shakespeare or Renaissance studies. The amount is approximately $975 and is awarded in the spring semester each year.

The Department of English Homecoming Writing Contest celebrates the creative and scholarly writing of undergraduate students within ASU English (English; Culture, Technology and Environment; and Film and Media Studies majors or minors [non-BIS]). ASU Online students are eligible. Awards will be presented to the first place winners in the following categories (applicants may submit one entry* per category):

Don and Alleen Nilsen, professors of English at Arizona State University and co-founders of the International Society for Humor Studies established this award in 2011. This scholarship is given for the best humorous online presentation that teaches any aspect of language. In other words, the presentation should do more than just make an audience laugh: It should make an audience laugh while teaching them something about language.

The Department of English Faculty Scholarship is for undergraduate English; Culture, Technology and Environment; and Film and Media Studies majors in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Online students are eligible. The approximately $1,000 scholarship is awarded in the spring for the upcoming fall semester. It is awarded on the basis of need as well as grades and recommendations.
