Language Placement and Proficiency Testing
English placement (Accuplacer) - for students without SAT or ACT verbal scores
International students whose native language is not English (regardless of current residency) must provide proof of English proficiency for the Graduate College as outlined in the ASU academic catalog. Your application will not be processed without valid proof of English proficiency. ASU does not accept TOEFL iBT® Home Edition, TOEFL iBT® Paper Edition, or TOEFL Essentials Exams.
As of Fall 2019, WORD: Creative Writing @ ASU is inactive. Please explore other clubs that may be of interest to you via SunDevilSync, which lists active student organizations.
WORD is dedicated to all students with an interest in creative writing, whether in the major or not. We aim to provide workshop space, writing activities, lectures on improving technique, and fun games and events that students of all majors and skill levels can enjoy.

The Glendon and Kathryn Swarthout Awards in Writing are one of ASU’s oldest and most celebrated traditions, recognizing the promising creative work of student writers. This will be the 63rd year of the awards, which are made possible by the generosity of Swarthout Family.
There will be sixteen Glendon and Kathryn Swarthout Awards in Writing given annually, divided into two categories Undergraduate and Graduate. These awards will consist of a first, second, third, and honorable mention prize in each genre, poetry and fiction.

Lyon Award Submission Period: October 20 - November 6, 2025 -- submit via 5 p.m.
Mabelle A. Lyon published more than 1,000 poems in commercial and literary magazines and anthologies. She founded the first public library in Goodyear, Arizona and co-founded the Arizona Poetry Society, serving as the first president. After she died, friends and family of Lyon made a memorial gift to establish the Mabelle A. Lyon Poetry Award at ASU in honor of her love of poetry.
