Previously on the faculty at the University of Notre Dame and Middlebury College, Evans was a member of the literature faculty at ASU, where he “influenced countless generations of students.”

He was deeply spiritual. Evans attended daily mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish and was a coordinator in the City of the Lord Catholic Charismatic Community. He was an impactful mentor. A friend and former student of Evans’s, retired UCLA faculty member and ASU alum Bill Creasy (BA 1975; MA 1977), shared a remembrance of Evans’s religious and academic leadership on his bible podcast.

A visitation, mass and burial were held in early December in Tempe.
