What is a Research Internship Award?

A research internship pairs a student with a faculty member who does research as part of their ASU work. The student receives funding at the end of the semester for work on the research 10 hours/week.
Students choose whether to complete the internship for academic credit or simply for experience.
Amounts
In the spring of 2026, awards of approximately $2,000 each are available for a mix of undergraduate students and graduate students. These awards are made possible with funding from an anonymous donor.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the awards, applicants must:
- Be an undergraduate or graduate student at ASU, online or Tempe campus, with a declared major or program of study housed in the Department of English in The College of Liberal of Arts and Sciences. This includes but may not be limited to:
- Creative writing
- Culture, technology and environment
- English (any concentration, including the new concentration in narrative studies)
- English education
- Film and media studies
- Linguistics and applied linguistics / TESOL
- Writing, rhetorics and literacies
- Articulate interest in a research area that matches an ASU Department of English faculty member’s specialty. Note that only faculty members whose responsibilities include a research component are eligible to supervise research internships.
- During the internship, complete 10 hours/week for the duration of the semester, reporting to the supervisory faculty member. There is no minimum enrollment status to be eligible for this award; students may be full-time, half-time, or even part-time.
Process and timeline
Faculty and staff may nominate potential awardees. Students may also self-nominate.
