Purpose

The Department of English’s Faculty Summer Research and Creative Activity Fellowships are designed to support full-time departmental faculty (Track and Career) for their research or creative projects (individual or collaborative) that advance the Department’s commitment to increasing our academic and public impact. Research and creative activity in our department are conducted across many fields, including Creative Writing, English Education, Film and Media Studies, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Literature, and Writing/Rhetorics/Literacies. 

Funding.  

  1. Summer fellowships will be available May 16 - August 15.
  2. In 2024, the Department will offer six (6) fellowships of $3,000 each to individual faculty members working on research or creative projects. (These fellowships are intended to be permanent, but the number of fellowships offered yearly will depend upon budget considerations).
  3. You may select how you would like to receive your funds. You have two options:
    1. A summer stipend (which will be taxed)
    2. A summer addition to your research/travel/professional development fund (which is not taxed)
      1. Travel for field work, archival work, conference presentation, etc.
      2. Research/creative activity materials and supplies

Deadline for Submitting Proposals. 

  1. February 15, 2024: Deadline to Submit Proposals for Summer 2024 funding. 
  2. December 15, 2023 - Feb 15, 2024 2024:  Submission Link will be live. (Be on the lookout for an email from the chair with the link)

Criteria for Evaluation of Proposals.

  1. Prospects for contribution/impact (e.g., publication, grant funding, conference presentation, future collaboration)
  2. Realistic plan that can be completed during the summer
  3. Clear description of project, conceptual framework, and methods

Applicant Eligibility. 

  1. Applications are welcomed from any full-time track or career faculty from the Department of English at ASU. 
  2. Recipients of the Department of English Summer Research Fellowship will be eligible to apply for a subsequent departmental summer fellowship three (3) years after the most recent award.

Award Review

Applications will be reviewed by the English Department's Awards Committee each spring.

Award Announcement

Fellowship recipients will be announced by the end of spring semester.
