The Department of English is excited to announce a pilot program to support faculty who mentor undergraduate research in English.
Tenured and tenure-track faculty members in the Department of English who agree to mentor an undergraduate student – in any ASU program, on the Tempe campus or online – on a research, engagement, or creative project of benefit to ASU may apply for $1,000 per semester to support that mentorship. (Limit: 2 applications per faculty member per year.)
Please note that traditional scholarly research will not be evaluated as inherently more meritorious than creative or engaged work. The project’s benefit to ASU’s reputation and community are of importance, regardless.
Grant monies will be disbursed at the conclusion of the mentorship period, after submission of a project report.
Requirements
The faculty member must submit:
- A 500-800-word description of the project on which the student will assist. The description must include a rough timeline for project completion and outline a schedule of student meetings.
- The name and ASU ID of the student mentee. Mentees must already be in place at the time of application.
- An end-of-semester report on the mentorship and its results. (Delivery of the grant is contingent upon the report.)
- Mentees may attend any program on the Tempe campus or online.
Judging
ASU Department of English leadership, including the Chair and Associate Chair(s), will evaluate applications as they are received.
Project submissions will be evaluated based on:
- Clarity and completeness
- Value for the researcher and student
- Feasibility and coherence of plan
Preference will be given to faculty projects that involve Department of English majors, minors, and students currently enrolled in English courses.
Deadlines
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all funds are exhausted (approximately 10 awards per semester).
