The grade of “I” (Incomplete) can only be given by an instructor when a student, who is doing otherwise acceptable work, is unable to complete a course (e.g., final exam or term paper) because of illness or other conditions beyond the student’s control. Incomplete grades are not guaranteed and are under the discretion of the instructor.
To ensure a timely review, it’s important to review all information provided on this page. This page is intended to guide students taking a course in the Department of English through the process of requesting an Incomplete grade.
Instructions
Eligibility for an Incomplete Grade
- An incomplete is not an automatic or guaranteed option. Students must be in regular communication with the instructor and notify them of the request before submitting the below form.
- If approved, students are required to arrange with the instructor for the completion of the course requirements. Students do not re-register or pay fees to complete the course.
- Note: If you are experiencing a serious illness, injury or other significant personal situation that prevents you from continuing your classes, please review the medical/compassionate withdrawal information from The College.
Considerations for an Incomplete Grade
- For students who receive an Incomplete in an undergraduate course, the "I" grade will be automatically changed to a failing grade "E" if the course is not completed within one calendar year. Instructors may set course completion deadlines at any time within one calendar year, at their discretion.
- Any Incomplete grades must receive a final grade before graduation or the degree cannot be awarded.
- Consult with Financial Aid and Scholarship Services with any questions regarding how an Incomplete grade may affect financial aid and scholarship renewal.
Have you spoken to your instructor about requesting an incomplete grade? If so, fill out the Incomplete Request Form. Once you submit the form, the request will go to your instructor for review.

Considerations for an Incomplete Grade
- For students who receive a grade of “I” in a graduate course (500-level or above), the “I” grade will become a permanent part of the transcript if the course is not completed within one calendar year. Instructors may set course completion deadlines at any time within one calendar year, at their discretion.
- If the course is required for the degree and the “I” becomes permanent, the student will need to retake the course. Retaking the course does not replace the previous grade.
